Fuller BIO

Once upon a time, in an ordinary southern midwestern town, there lived a teenager with a rebellious spirit who was being raised by a single mom. The last of 7 children, GaREE was a problem child, a high-school dropout, and a heavy drinker. His family hoped that he might someday land a factory job and then “straiten up and fly right.” The public school system had given up on him; but destiny had something extraordinary in store. In his teenage years, GaREE roamed the streets, perhaps subconsciously seeking the father he never knew and hoping for any stimuli to relieve teenage boredom and angst. He skipped school, hung around a local bar with older alcoholics, sought adrenaline-fueled adventures, and clashed with authority. His path seemed destined for a hardscrabble working-class existence at best, or a life of crime at worst. But GaREE felt something inside. He did not know what to call it, though many years later he would learn that psychologists call it the “Growth Mindset”. He read a quote: “The largest room in the world is the room for improvement.” Man, he thought, do I ever need a lot of improving. About that time GaREE became friends with a guy who was a few years older. This guy, Gene, had been to college for a couple of years. Perhaps Gene saw GaREE’s rebellious spirit as a cry to break out of the mold that society had cast him in. At any rate, Gene knew that education was a key to transformation, and he himself planned to go back to college and finish. It would be great to have GaREE tag along. But there was a problem. GaREE had at most just one semester of high school credits.

No way a college would let him sit for the entrance exam. State law, however, contained an exception: the GED test, which, if passed, provided one with a high school equivalency certificate. So GaREE studied, took the GED, passed with plenty of room to spare, passed the college entrance exam (after hitchhiking 165 miles to get there), and a month later arrived at college with $15 in his pockets. To make ends meet, GaREE took a part-time job, managed to get a small student loan, and roomed with Gene (cheap rent). When he wasn’t working or sleeping, GaREE was studying, determined to make up for lost time. As the days turned into months, his academic prowess became evident; and by his sophomore year he was earning scholarships. Embracing the transformative power of education, GaREE's dreams soared to unprecedented heights. He boldly imagined that he would earn a Ph.D; and he did. He imagined that he would make a living teaching college students; and he did. The scars of his troubled past began to heal. GaREE had a successful career in academia, first as a professor and later as a university administrator. His favorite of his own publications was on Alexander Hamilton, long before the great book by Ron Chernow and the brilliant musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda restored Hamilton to his rightful place in American history.

GaREE inspired younger members of his extended family to seek a better life through education. After decades as a working professional, Dr. All retired from academic life and felt that he had earned the right to fully enjoy the 3 R’s of retirement: Rest, Recreation and Relaxation. Yet, deep inside, there remained a yearning for self expression. Now, in his so-called golden years, GaREE has rediscovered his creative side and his love for music. His songs vary widely as perhaps befits a songwriter who has lived a varied life. GaREE now steps onto stages and belts out his original lyrics, often with the same passionate fire that once lit up the mean streets of his hometown. With each performance, he captivates audiences young and old, showing them that it is never too late to pursue one’s passions and rewrite the narrative of their lives. So, the next time you hear a song that grabs you, remember the true story of GaREE ALL—a former high-school dropout turned Ph.D and college professor—who now shares his perspectives with the world. May his story serve as a reminder that dreams can blossom from the unlikeliest of places and that the power to change lives resides within each of us.
